St Thomas More Times

St Thomas More school opened in 1954. It is 50 years old. Mrs Ellis came to this is what class 2 interviewed Mrs Ellis, and this is what class 2 found out.

Where did the infants play?

The infants played on the car park a long time ago. The children had to move to a different playground, because more teachers had cars, and children can't play where cars are.

Was there any thing different in the hall?

There was a stage in the hall because we did pantomimes.

What was the headteacher like?

The headteacher was a nun called Sister Mercy. Naughty children were given the cane because they did bad things. Now it is illegal to hit children, and the teachers aren't nuns.

Toys and games in the 1950's

Nathan McCormick is in Reception. His Grandma went to Eastoft school in the years 1942 to 1947. When she was at school she played very different games to what we play today, whip and top, rounders, hide and seek and pretend cricket. Pretend cricket was played with a piece of wood, wickets were drawn on the wall and they also use a ball.

Some children have the game "operation". They couldn't have "operation" in the olden days because they didn't have batteries.

My Dad played football when he was a little boy. My Mum had a teddy when she was little. My Gran and Grandad liked to play with dominoes, marbles and football. They didn't have computers and they didn't watch television. They didn't have any battery operated toys.

1950's poems by class 4

1950's is such fun, now its time to strut your stuff, there is Elvis king of rock, now its time for rock 'n' pop.

Playband, dance on the sand, listen all night long, When it gets dark sit in the park, and watch the moon go down. so in the mornin, you'll be yawnin, to Elvis's soothing sound.

Elvis is cool, Elvis is fun, he sings to you in the sun, everytime when you guzzle down wine.
