Curriculum - Core Subject Outlines

As a school we are committed to ensuring that every child has full access to the curriculum regardless of gender, race, ability or disability.  We provide positive images and role models whether these are to be found in books, discussion or pictures.

Literacy

We aim to ensure that each child will be able to read fluently and with understanding, but more than this, we want children to develop a love of books and actually possess a desire to read.  It is also vital that children learn to communicate effectively in speech and in writing.  Handwriting, spelling, grammar, all need constant practise and systematic teaching and these skills will be developed as children progress through the school and find their employment in different contexts encountered in cross curriculum topics.

Numeracy

Mathematics is a tool for ordering, manipulating and solving problems in society.  Wherever possible we aim to teach maths within context and for a purpose.  In order for this to be achieved it is vital children learn the basic building blocks of numbers, namely number bonds and multiplication tables.

Science

This is a blend of learning scientific knowledge and developing the ability to conduct oneself like a scientist.  The emphasis here is on the practical, the actual doing of science.  Science involves testing, hypothesising, observing, recording, controlling variables, but starts with curiosity and the ability to approach situations, challenges, questions ? How? Why?, What if?

Sex and Relationships Education

Our Sex and Relationships Education Policy describes how we incorporate sex education within our school curriculum and gives more detailed information of what is taught throughout the school.  You are very welcome to come into school and discuss the policy.

Information Technology ICT

Skills in information technology permeate almost every aspect of what we do in school be it word processing, data handling, programming, designing or simulation, and as such, is taught as an integral part of the entire curriculum rather than as a subject in it?s own right.   We have an I.T. suite and are part of the National Grid for Learning which will give the children access to the Internet.

Religious Education

Every effort is made to create within our school community an atmosphere in which the children know that they are loved and where they can feel confident and secure.  The Governors and staff attach a great deal of importance to the ethos and atmosphere of the school.

Our Religious Scheme "Here I Am", is used throughout the school and is designed to provide continuity and progression within the context of religious education.

Our religious teaching aims to:

"Lead our children to a knowledge and love of God"

"Instruct them in the doctrine of the Catholic Faith"

"Encourage them by word and example, to have a respect

          and loving concern for others."

At least 10% of our teaching time is devoted to Religious Education.

Mass is celebrated in school.  Information on Mass times can be found in the Parish weekly newsletter or the school news letter.  Assemblies, or acts of collective worship, are held on a daily basis in school, and parents have the right by law to withdraw their children from these.

Sport

Each child receives two periods of P.E. each week. All children require a change of clothing for this subject.  This is part of the school dress and consists of a pair of plimsolls, a white T-shirt and a pair of black shorts.  It is important that this kit is kept in school throughout the week to enable children to take advantage of clement weather conditions.  For this purpose a drawstring P.E. bag is required.

Please ensure that all P.E. clothes and kit,

including P.E. bag, are clearly labelled.

Swimming lessons are part of the timetable for children in Class 4.  It is the LEA's policy that all children attend swimming lessons unless excused on medical grounds for which a note is essential.
