Whilst assessing and recording your child's progress through school it may become apparent that she/he is experiencing difficulties, perhaps with some aspect of school work, their speech or behaviour.  After discussion between yourself and the Headteacher / Class Teacher, it may be decided to consult a  "Support Teacher" who has been specially trained to identify and advise on specific areas of children's development.

An assessment would be carried out, and then advice be given to yourself and the teacher. Perhaps an individual programme of work would be devised, with suggestions of activities for you to try at home.  The school is required by law to have a named person to act as SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator).

This person is Mrs Stratford.  Any concerns should be addressed to her or your child's teacher.  If it is felt your child needs more intervention, then an educational psychologist may be invited to talk to you and the class teacher.  If special resources are needed such as extra help in the classroom or a placement in a special unit at a different school then a "Statement of Special Educational Needs" would be necessary in order to achieve this.  This is a lengthy procedure and not always appropriate.

A copy of the Special Educational Needs Policy, can be found in the school office.  It is important that you see your child's teacher or the Headteacher if you have any concerns about your child in school.  Please do not wait until a "Parents Evening" before coming to see us.  In this way we hope to ensure that no child is made to feel different or disadvantaged in any way whatsoever.

In addition to the formal curriculum and the acquisition of knowledge and skills, we also seek to develop effective relationships within the learning environment of the school, fostering self-esteem, tolerance and consideration, regardless of race or gender.
